This paper is relevant to topics discussed in Chapters 4, 8 and 15. We have often tried to show the interconnectedness of various materials and processes throughout the environment and this paper nicely makes that connection, while the authors simultaneously examine nitric and nitrous oxide emission from typical croplands and after N fertilizer application in greenhouse vegetable cropping systems in southeast China. The authors highlight the role played by the active nitrogenous gases played in the global nitrogen cycle.

This paper adds to our discussion of nitrification, as part of the nitrogen cycle, providing an alternative anaerobic pathway for the oxidation of ammonium and the production of dinitrogen gas from nitrite by the anaerobic ammonium-oxidizing (anammox) bacteria.
