1. Research one interest group from each of the subcategories of economic and noneconomic interest groups. Are some economic interest groups more similar to noneconomic groups than they are to economic groups? To what degree have the interest groups you have chosen been successful, and why or how?
2. Explore http://www.opensecrets.org/ to determine the ways in which interest groups work to influence congressional politics through campaign contributions and lobbying.
3. Search for information on the National Rifle Association (NRA), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). What are the main approaches used by each of these groups to further their interests? How are their approaches similar and different?
4. Search the Southern Poverty Law Center website for data regarding the growth of hate groups in the United States. Examine the types of groups that have developed and consider why this growth has occurred and explore the ways in which these groups are attempting to influence the political system.
