  • Nightingale could not solve the problems created by her country’s military malfeasance, but she helped save so many lives that she quickly became a national hero.
  • Her work in the Crimean War as well as her best-selling book, Notes on Nursing (1859), did much to raise the status of her profession and improve care for the sick.
  • And her prestige later made her an effective advocate for military reform.
  • In all her work, Nightingale became a model for women throughout Europe who wanted to take the caring, nurturing role that society reserved for them outside the confines of the family and into the realm of public life.
