Paraxial Mesoderm: The Somites and Their Derivatives

Although some differences exist among species, it appears that the different BMP concentrations may result in differential expression of the Forkhead (Fox) family of transcription factors, with Foxf1 being transcribed in regions that will become the lateral plate mesoderm, and Foxc1 and Foxc2 transcribed in the regions that will form the somites (Wilm et al. 2004). Loss of Foxc1 and Foxc2 in mouse results in the respecification of paraxial mesoderm into intermediate mesoderm.
