  1. Approaches to conflict take various styles. Effective conflict management often involves balancing dual concerns about self and others.
    1. Conflict is expressed through nonassertion, indirect communication,
        , direct aggression, and assertion.
        • messages are by far the most productive and involve describing the other’s behavior, interpreting the behavior,
            , indicating the consequences, and stating your intentions.
          • Men and women approach conflict differently, with men thriving on competition and women gravitating toward emotional connections.
          • Cultural variances such as individualistic goals versus
              influence how we deal with conflict.
            • Online communication has changed the nature of interpersonal conflict through characteristics such as delay, disinhibition, and permanence.
          • Conflict can be resolved with four methods defined by their outcomes: Win-Lose, Lose-Lose,
              , or Win-Win. Win-Win, which satisfies the needs of everyone involved, has several steps: identify your problem and unmet needs, make a date, describe your problem and needs, check partner’s understanding, solicit partner’s needs, check understanding of partner’s needs, discuss ways to meet common goals, and follow up on the solution.
