  1. Communication
      is the expressed struggle between at least two interdependent parties who perceive incompatible goals, scarce rewards, and interference from the other parties in achieving their goals. Various conditions give rise to conflict: expressed struggle, incompatible goals, perceived scarce resources, and interdependence.
      1. Personal relationships are a lot like the weather. The
          of a relationship refers to the emotional tone as it is expressed in the messages that the partners send and receive.
          • are actions and words that express respect and that value the other person by showing recognition, acknowledging thoughts and feelings, and exhibiting agreement.
          • Disconfirming responses are words and actions that express a lack of caring or respect for another person.
              is a message that is personal, all-encompassing, and accusatory. Contempt are verbal and nonverbal messages that ridicule or belittle the other person.
                involves protecting oneself by counterattacking the other person. And
                  is refusing to engage with the other person.
                  • are a reciprocal pattern of communication in which messages, either confirming or disconfirming, between two or more communicators reinforce one another. In an
